Biography

Professor Doctor Omer Devaja was born in 1964 in Sombor. He finished primary and secondary school in Novi Sad, with excellent results. He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine in Novi Sad in 1989 with an average grade of 9.65.

In the period from 1990 to 1995, he worked at the Clinic for Operative Surgery, at the Institute of Oncology in Sremska Kamenica, where in 1994 he successfully passed the specialist exam in gynecology. He defended his master's thesis entitled "Early changes in the urinary tract of women suffering from cervical cancer St Ib after surgical and radiological therapy" in 1992, and in the same year he was elected to the position of assistant at the Department of Oncology at the Faculty of Medicine in Novi Sad. .

Scholarship from the Stanley Thomas Johnson Foundation for doctoral studies in London, in St. Thomas Hospital in the laboratory of the Imperial Cancer Research Foundation (ICRF) in 1995, and for the next two years he engaged in scientific and research work in the molecular biology of ovarian and endometrial cancer. He defended his doctoral dissertation entitled "Expression of heat shock protein (hsp27) in endometrial and ovarian cancer" in 2000.

He passed the specialist exam in gynecology and obstetrics in Great Britain in 2002, when he also became a member of the Royal Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (MRCOG). In St. Thomas Hospital in London, in the period from 1998 to 2001, he completed a sub-specialization in the field of gynecological-oncological surgery, where in 2001 he also passed the subspecialty exam.

In the course of his long career, he attended professional training in Canada, Spain, Egypt, Germany and India.

From 2003 until today, he works as a specialist in gynecology and a subspecialist surgeon for gynecological oncology at the West Kent Cancer Center in Maidstone, Great Britain, where in 2006. becomes director of the subspecialty program in gynecological oncology for South East England. In the same year, he became the head of the Gynecological Oncology Department at the West Kent Cancer Center. From January 2019, he became the director of specialized surgical branches at Maidstone Hospital. He also works at London Bridge Hospital in London.

Endoscopic operations (laparoscopy and hysteroscopy) prof. Dr. Omer Devaja started practicing more than 20 years ago, and he completed additional professional training in this surgical technique in Quebec, Canada. He introduced laparoscopic hysterectomy, laparoscopic radical hysterectomy, laparoscopic pelvic lymphadenectomy to the Oncology Center in England and is one of the pioneers in the development of sentinel gland detection in uterine body cancer and cervical cancer. This method provides greater accuracy in detecting lymph node metastases compared to standard pelvic lymphadenectomy, with a significant reduction in complications. From 2024, Professor Omer Devaja also performs robotic gynecological operations.

Prof. Dr. Omer Devaja is an examiner at Gyus, Kings, and St.Thomas Medical School and an examiner at the subspecialty exam for Gynecologic Oncology at the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (RCOG). He is a member of the subspecialty committee of the British Gynecological Cancer Society (BGCS). He is also a member of the BGCS presidency and the International Society of Gynecological Endoscopy (ISGE). Member of numerous national and international associations (RCOG, BGCS, BSCCP, ESGO, BSGE, ESGE). Since 2014, he has been engaged as a visiting professor at the Faculty of Medicine in Novi Sad.

He organized more than 30 courses in laparoscopic surgery and sentinel gland detection in gynecological oncology.

During his career, he published over 50 professional papers and published two books: "Atlas of laparoscopic surgery in gynecology" and "Ovarian cancer".

He presented over 50 expert papers at national and international congresses and held numerous lectures as an invited lecturer.

The field of activity of Prof. Dr. Omera Devaje is a gynecological surgery with complete diagnostics: gynecological examination with smears including PAPA smear and HPV test, colposcopy with treatment of premalignant lesions of the cervix, erosion of cervical and endometrial polyps (LLETZ LOOP), ultrasound examinations, as well as endoscopic examination of the endometrium with a hysteroscope for diagnosis benign and malignant diseases as well as in the investigation of infertility. He performs operative hysteroscopy for resection of poplip myoma and treatment of subfertility.

In addition to classic gynecological operations, the special area of ​​expertise of prof. Dr. Omera Devaje is a laparoscopic surgeon (minimally invasive surgeon) in gynecology and gynecologic oncology. Treatment of ovarian cysts, fibroids, examination of subfertility, pelvic pain, endometriosis, profuse, irregular vaginal bleeding and polycystic ovaries. He also performs diagnostics and surgical treatment of gynecological pre-small conditions and malignancies (endometrium, cervix, ovary and vulva).

During the last 20 years, he has performed over 1000 laparoscopic operations including radical laparoscopic hysterectomy in the treatment of cervical cancer, laparoscopic pelvic lymphadenectomy in the treatment of cervical and uterine body cancer, laparoscopic detection of the sentinel gland, operations of malignant changes on the vulva.

Professor Omer Devaja, PhD, consults and performs all daily procedures under local and general anesthesia in the polyclinic for all the listed diseases.
